H. Matthew Wheatley, M.D.
Dr. H. Matthew Wheatley joined the Retina-Vitreous Center in 2000. He graduated with High Honors from Cook College at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. He then received his M.D. degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After an internship at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, NJ, he studied as a resident in ophthalmology at the renowned UCLA-Jules Stein Eye Institute. Dr. Wheatley was a fellow in vitreoretinal disease and surgery at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital and Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, where he was honored with a Heed Ophthalmic Fellowship and an ARVO-National Eye Institute Travel Grant. Dr. Wheatly was also elected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America in 2008.
Dr. Wheatley is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the New Jersey Academy of Ophthalmology, the New Jersey Retina Society, and the New York State Ophthalmological Society. He serves on the staff of the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ, and Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood, NJ.
Dr. Wheatley has researched, published, and lectured at national meetings on numerous topics in ophthalmology, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, Marfan syndrome, corneal transplantation, AIDS-related eye disease, macular hole, macular pucker, digital ophthalmic imaging, and myopic degeneration. He has also been a Principal Investigator in the nationwide Vitrase for Vitreous Hemorrhage Study.
